What’s a Vision Board?

 A Vision Board (also sometimes called a Treasure Map, an Image Bank, a Mood Board or  Creativity Collage) is a poster board on which you paste or collage images that you’ve torn out from various magazines. The images can be very specific – like a new dream house. Or they can be images that evoke a feeling – like a picture of a woman meditating that makes you feel deeply peaceful. It’s simple.

The truth behind this technique is this:

When you surround yourself with images of who you want to become, what you want to have, where you want to live or vacation, your life changes to match those images and those desires.

Vision Boards add clarity to your desires and feeling to your visions.

Most people never pause long enough to ask themselves what they want.

They just let life happen to them. I think this is because most people don’t believe they can really create their own happiness, or their own wealth, or their own anything! They’ve succumbed to what I call “The Oh-Well Conspiracy.”

“Oh well. What did you expect?”

“Oh well. That’s the way it goes.”

“Oh well. It wasn’t meant to happen.”

A Vision Board moves you out of “Oh-well” and into “Well well!” (as in, “Well well! Look what I created!”) very quickly!

Why a Vision Board

• Vision Boards are VISUAL. You cut out pictures you like and stick them on a posterboard. It’s a creative activity as you are working with your hands.

• The mind tends to quieten down.

• The ego (the scary you) drifts away and the Authentic You, the creative you takes over. That creative YOU does not care about control, perfection or how to make things happen.

• You get to listen to your soul and open up to the wisdom you have inside you.

• You get to FEEL instead of always running around and DOING.

How to make an effective Vision Board?

1. Flip through magazines.

2. Cut out any picture that you like, that speaks to you in some way or another.

3. Sort the images by color or theme (Family, Work, Me-time etc)

4. Arrange pictures on posterboard.

5. Glue them on the poster.

6. Decorate: add color, ribbons, anything you fancy to make it yours.

7. Add YOU (a picture of yourself – very powerful)

8. Display: hang it up in a place where you see it regularly: the bathroom, your office, the bedroom…

9. Act: start acting like that person to whom this vision belongs. What would she do? Taking conscious action in your daily life is a key component of this process.

3 Types of Vision Boards

1. The “I Know Exactly What I Want” Vision Board

• You’re very clear about your desires.

• You want to change your environment or surroundings.

• There is a specific thing you want to manifest in your life. (i.e. a new home, or starting a business.)

2 – The “Opening and Allowing” Vision Board

• You’re not sure what exactly you want.

• You’ve been in a period of depression or grief.

• You have a vision of what you want, but are uncertain about it in some way.

• You know you want change but don’t know how it’s possible.

3 – The “Theme” Vision Board

• It’s your birthday or New Year’s Eve or any landmark day.

• A significant event has started a new cycle in your life. A divorce. A job change. A new business.

• If you are working with one particular area of your life. For instance, Work & Career.

Vision Board done, now what?

VISIBLE:

Hang it in a visible place

BE:

• Be open and listen to new opportunities that arrive

• Do they fit in your vision board?

DO:

• Eliminate – get rid of things, situations, habits, people that no longer serve you or the vision you created

• Adapt – adapt your life so that it starts to look more and more like your vision – take it slowly: baby steps

• Change – sometimes you cannot get rid of but you can change things, your attitude, your surroundings. Small changes often have a great ripple effect.

HAVE:

Once you have done all of the above, you will start having your vision board life. Sometimes it can go really fast. Sometimes things take time.
